The Founding of TMGC

A New Millennium, A Timeless Legacy

The Millennium Golf Club (TMGC) was founded in November 1999. The club’s name was inspired by the upcoming new millennium, symbolizing a fresh start for a community-centered club. The first official gathering took place under the coconut tree near the Chula Vista Golf Club’s first tee box on Bonita Street, Chula Vista, CA, where the original six members met to establish TMGC. These founding members included Jay Ruiz, Mondito Uson, Bob Concepcion, the late Johnny Pontino, and two active participants who remain vital to the club today: Dave Moreno and Christine Scranton.

TMGC’s Early Days

The Seeds of Growth and Community

In its early years, TMGC operated on a small scale. Dave Moreno initially managed all aspects of the tournaments, from pairings and scheduling to scoring and handicapping, effectively as a "one-man show." Shortly afterward, Jay Ruiz introduced Lulu Mendoza, who quickly became a dedicated member and instrumental force in the club’s growth.

By the close of the 20th century, TMGC’s membership had grown to 20 golfers, marking the beginning of its expansion. Today, the club boasts over 60 members and is recognized as the second-oldest Filipino-American golf club in San Diego County.

Guided by Visionaries

TMGC’s Leaders Through the Years

TMGC has flourished under various leaderships over the years, currently guided by Ray Abayan, the club president, with strong support from Lulu Mendoza. Their steady direction has continued the legacy established by previous leaders, including past presidents Bobby Balolong, Caloy Mabalot, Carl Bowers, Mike Echada, Art Castro, George Tiamzon, Jon Montemayor, and Ed Yaptangco. TMGC’s success and longevity are a testament to the dedication and community spirit of its members and leaders throughout the years.
